New Balance SuperComp Rebel

A 222 g plated trainer for the hard sessions of an ordinary week — race-shoe snap without spending a race shoe to get it.

The SuperComp Rebel is New Balance's plated trainer rather than its plated racer. Infinion foam, a propulsion plate and a rockered midsole are aimed at the sessions you run most weeks, not at one morning in October, and at 222 g it is light enough to feel quick without being disposable.

It suits you if you want some of a race shoe's snap on a Tuesday and would rather keep your actual racers for racing. Threshold work, intervals, and a half if you get on with the ride.

It is not an easy-day shoe. The plate and the rocker push you into a rhythm that turns tiring at conversational pace, and jogging your recovery miles in it wastes the thing it is good at. Keep a softer trainer underneath it for the volume.
