Merrell Moab Speed 2

Merrell's hike-and-run crossover — Moab durability on a 34 mm heel and a road-familiar 10 mm drop.

Moab Speed is Merrell filing its hiking franchise down until it runs, and the 2 is the current version. Merrell still lists it under hiking, and it keeps the Moab's durability and moderate lugs, but it runs a 10 mm drop that feels familiar off a road trainer rather than the low drops most trail shoes use.

It suits you if your days out mix walking and running — a fast hike, a trail you jog the runnable parts of, a rucksack weekend where you still want to move. It covers ground and it lasts, which is what the Moab name is for.

It is not built for a run held at pace start to finish. At 340 g it is heavy, the ride is stable rather than lively, and a dedicated trail trainer is lighter and far more responsive when you are running the whole way.
