The Mudtalon V2 is what inov-8 makes for the worst of winter. Eight-millimetre studs in STICKYGRIP rubber dig into soft ground and shed the mud between strides, and the platform underneath is deliberately low and firm so you can feel what you are standing on.
It suits you if you race fell, cross country or obstacle events, or if your winter running happens on ground that would leave an ordinary trail shoe skating. At 268 g it is light enough to race in, and there is nothing between you and the ground when you climb.
It is not a trainer. Those studs are miserable on rock and tarmac and wear down quickly there, and there is not enough foam under them for a long day on hard trails.
