The Tecton X 3 is Hoka's trail racer. Two parallel carbon plates with winglets sit between two layers of PEBA foam, and a Vibram Megagrip outsole is paired with a Matryx upper that resists the abrasion trail shoes usually die from.
It is made for long days run fast. Splitting the plate lets each side of the shoe twist independently, so you get the propulsion of a carbon shoe without it fighting you when the ground goes uneven, and ultras and long mountain races are the point of that.
It is not a shoe for everyday trail miles. The foam and the plates cost too much to grind through on easy runs, and on tight technical ground the tall stack asks more of your ankles than a lower shoe would. Save it for the races that matter.
