The Skyward X 2 is Hoka's plated daily trainer: a max-cushioned midsole with a convex carbon plate suspended inside it, so the whole stack compresses and springs back rather than squashing. Against the original it is lighter, a little lower, and the plate is reshaped to tip you further forward.
It suits you if you already own something fast and want maximum protection for everything else — the week after a hard block, the long Sunday, the days when getting home intact is the point. Worth having if you are buying now, not worth swapping a working pair for.
It is not a race shoe. At 312 g it is heavy, the platform is tall and wide, and the plate holds the stack steady rather than making you quick. It also sits at the top of Hoka's price list, a lot for a shoe you will mostly run slowly in.
