Best for
HOKA built the Rocket X Trail for the one kind of trail that rewards all-out speed. An aggressive, road-racing inspired rocker and an H-shaped carbon-fiber plate drive a responsive dual-layer midsole, under a pared-back, super-secure upper with a lightweight, minimal outsole. At about 268 g and a 6 mm drop it is a road racer that moved onto dirt.
It suits tempo efforts and fast sessions on buff dirt and gravel roads, where a plated, rockered shoe can be let loose without technical ground slowing it.
It is not for rough, technical terrain. HOKA devised it for cruising at top speed on smooth surfaces, and the minimal outsole and stiff plate give up grip and forgiveness elsewhere.
