Brooks Hyperion Max 3

A high-stack, nylon-plated trainer for threshold work and fast long runs — the shoe you train in, not race in.

The Hyperion Max 3 is Brooks' fast trainer: a tall stack of light foam over a nylon SpeedVault plate, at a 6 mm drop and just over 280 g. The plate stiffens the toe-off rather than launching you, which makes holding a pace cheaper without the harshness a carbon racer brings.

It suits the middle of a training week — threshold runs, long runs with fast sections in them, and the sessions you would rather not spend race-shoe mileage on. There is enough shoe here to run the whole long run in.

It is not a race shoe and it is not a recovery shoe. The plate feels stiff at easy pace, and on the day itself a lighter carbon shoe will beat it. This is what you wear to arrive there in shape.
