Altra Olympus 6

Altra's max-cushioned trail shoe — 33 mm of foam, Vibram Megagrip, and a zero drop platform for long days.

The Olympus is the most cushioned trail shoe Altra makes, and the 6 pairs a 33 mm platform of compression-moulded EVA with a Vibram Megagrip outsole. It is zero drop like the rest of the range, which at this height means a lot of foam sitting level under the whole foot.

It suits you on long, rough days where the ground would otherwise beat you up — ultra distances, all-day trail runs and hiking. The Megagrip is the real argument for it: on wet rock and root it holds where softer compounds slide.

It is not a nimble shoe. At 345 g it is one of the heaviest trail shoes on sale, and the stack takes the precision out of technical descending. Save it for distance rather than for racing short.
