The Escalante is the lightest road shoe in Altra's regular range, and the 4 keeps the formula: a knit upper, EGO foam, a 24 mm platform front and back, and 269 g on the scale. There is much less between you and the road than in a modern trainer, which is the whole idea.
It suits you if you want to feel the ground and run in a natural foot position — easy miles, faster efforts, and gym or walking use where a tall stack gets in the way.
It is not a shoe for high-volume marathon training unless your legs are already conditioned to a low stack and zero drop. Come to it gradually, and keep something taller for the days when your legs are flat.
